Get Pickling

Yes it’s that time of year again and if you don’t want to pay out for pickles this winter it’s time to start pickling your own. It is so easy to do. To be honest homemade seem to taste better and are far cheaper than shop brought. I also give jars as pressies at Christmas and they are always well received, so go on and give it a go!

Top tip; if you don’t have any jars look on freecycle there are always plenty being offered on there.

  1. You can often get things to pickle free, if somebody has a glut. We’ve made loads of pickled pears this year because a friend’s pears all came on at once. And a red cabbage makes several jars of pickles and doesn’t cost much.
A tip: don’t pay out extra for pickling vinegar unless you really need the wide necked jar from it. You can use whatever whole spices are in your cupboard, tied up in a bit of j-cloth, to infuse dirt cheap malt vinegar. Cinnamon, cloves, allspice, star anise, cardamoms, pepprcorns, coriander and chillies are all good. Save the posh vinegar for salads!

  2. Thanks Jane some great tips there 🙂
